A team of Mexican customers of U.S. grains is in the United States this week to talk with farmers and lawmakers about the importance of trade between the two countries. U.S. Grains Council President and CEO Tom Sleight says the idea of the meetings this week stems from a recent U.S. Grains Council trip to Mexico.

Sleight: “The idea really came when we were meeting with our counterparts there our customers a little over a month ago a month ago. Where a lot of them said, ‘Why are you down here in Mexico? We need to be talking to more people in the United States.’ So yes, what better way to talk to people in the United States than to have some of the leadership come here and talk to farmers, talk to leaders, talk to officials and to remind everybody about the special relationship that has been built up literally over a generation.”

Sleight says hosting the team from Mexico comes at a vital time for agricultural trade.

Sleight: “Here again, we only need to look at the price of corn. Where it is right now and the fact that we need every market we can get. Mexican grain interests and industries have been actively going down to South America looking at buying from our competitions and actively getting bids. Again the things we’ve been doing since we’ve had our office up and running in Mexico City since 1981.”

The team of customers from Mexico will continue their tour and meetings through tomorrow.
