AG Trade with Japan

The Trump administration is not done looking to improve trade for farmers and ranchers.

The United States will push Japan to reduce tariffs on agricultural products beyond levels agreed to under a free trade agreement between Japan and the European Union.

That is according to Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue...

"We think frankly that we are a better ally of Japan than the European Union is and we would expect to have an equal or better deal than Japan gave the European Union regarding agriculture."

Under its trade agreement with the EU, Japan will scrap tariffs on many dairy and agricultural products . Tariffs on pork will be slashed and those on beef will also be cut to 9 percent.

Offering a better deal to U.S. farmers would likely anger some in Japan's agricultural sector.

Meanwhile - The Trump administration is riding high after it persuaded Canada to open up its dairy product market in negotiations to rework the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA.
