Last October, I did a story on world champion livestock auctioneer Jared Miller as he rattled off the call of the auctioneer at 7 Rivers Livestock Commission in Emmett, Idaho. It was a special day.

So,What does it take to become a world champion livestock auctioneer. Let's ask the defending champion Jared Miller of Iowa. “Throughout the course leading up to the semifinal round Livestock Marketing Association hosts three qualifying events. They take the top ten out of each of those events to the semifinal round which is held with Livestock Marketing Association's annual convention.” Plus one more the international champion crowned in Canada. “All of us sell seven drafts of cattle and then they pick the top 10 on Friday prior to the Saturday livestock auction in the auctioneering part of it. There's an interview round. That plays into a 25 percent of the final score. That's important as a spokesperson for the industry that the auctioneer knows what they're talking about, knows the value, knows product.” And like others competing at this year's World Livestock Auctioneer championships in California this June, Miller says he is carrying on a family tradition. “I grew up in an auction family, my dad was an auctioneer. He taught me a lot about the chant a lot about life.

He's probably my number one mentor.”
