03/06/06 Agricultural Safety Awareness Week

This is Agricultural Safety Awareness Week and that's the cue to bring in Hall of Fame Pitcher and Farm Bureau member Nolan Ryan. RYAN "Yogi Berra once you can observe a lot by just watching. Have you thought about what you loved ones might learn by watching you? Be a safety role model by using a seat belt and rollover protection on your tractor, wearing personal protective equipment and insisting that everyone plays it safe on the farm." Hundreds of Idaho kids are learning about safety thanks programs that take them to the farm. The images they get are graphic from the bucket on a front loader smashing a watermelon to a dummy caught in a tractor shaft. Nez Perce County nurse and paramedic Shari Kuther and a group of volunteers are doing their part. KUTHER "City kids need to know the message just as well as the farm kids. If we save one finger then all of our work has been worth it." So did these grade school students get the message? CHILD "We have to stay away from tractors." Farm Safety Awareness Week, a good time for adults to lead by example. RYAN "Step up to the plate by being a farm safety role model. Your loved ones are watching."
