04/18/06 Frances Field retires from legislature

For 22 years Frances Field served in the Idaho legislature while operating a farm near Grandview. This Farm Bureau member and retired teacher is ending her political career too. Field reminisced about traveling to Libya in 1978 and meeting dictator Moammar Qadhaifi who had sent a delegation to Idaho to buy grain. FIELD "The Secretary of State that would be the equivalent to our Secretary of State was in our living room. We bought them cowboy hats. They loved those cowboy hats." Because they were involved in trade talks Field and her husband Oscar were invited by Qadhaifi to tour his country. FIELD "I have never seen such poverty in all my life and they had all these oil wells and everything. And it was just like stepping back into the time of Christ because of the donkeys, all these flowing robes and yet they had these lavish means. A farmer was right at the top so we sat up at the head table with Qadhaifi and all those guys." Frances Field, longtime Farm Bureau member who leaves the state legislature after 11 terms representing Owyhee and Twin Falls counties. Voice of Idaho Agriculture Bill Scott
