Stand up and be counted! If you raise cattle in the Northwest you now have an opportunity to voice any beefs.  I’m Susan Allen, back after the break with more on the upcoming   January Cattle Survey. The US Department of Agriculture will contact nearly 50,000 cattle operations throughout the nation this January to participate in the January Cattle Survey. In WashingtonState they have targeted 600 producers, Idaho 1100 and Oregon 800. According to Christopher Mertz director of the Oregon Field Office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Services better  known as NASS,  they will be asking questions pertaining to trends in beef and dairy cattle inventories, calf crop and cattle operations. NASS hopes to utilize the data to help producers make better marketing decisions and plan for herd expansions or reductions. Survey results will also help packers and the government  evaluate expected slaughter volume for future months and determine potential supplies for export. All information is confidential and it isn’t difficult to participate. NASS will offer the option of responding via email, online or in personal interviews and the information will be turned around quick because survey responses are slated to  be published on January 29 2010.
