Ellen and The HSUS

Ellen DeGeneres is catching a lot of flack on agriculture internet blogs for her affiliation with the Humans Society of the U.S. Is it warranted? I’m Susan Allen this is OpenRange. I’ll share my two cents  after the  break. Conventional agriculture groups run up and down their chain  when  a new celebrity affiliates with an animal rights cause.  Ag news sites have been buzzing over the fact that Ellen DeGeneres has produced a comic book with thirty percent of  proceeds going to the Human Society of the United States anti ag activist group.  Several bloggers are calling for her head... boycott every thing Ellen to prove to her how wrong she is and that the ag industry has clout. Well  I don’t think she’s wrong,  I’d guess she’s misinformed,  (like the bevy of celeberites that link with the likes of PETA) and moved by the heart wrenching commericals the HSUS airs.  For years the livestock industry has done a poor job of educating consumers, policing  both producers and slaughter houses. Rather than villainize someone who is truly cares about animals, work with them to educate them and share thier platform.  Millions of people learned about quarter Horse Trainer Stacy Westfall's resistant free training methods when Ellen featured her bridleless exhibit on her show. There are a host  of celebrities that own working  ranches. Jeff Bridges, Jewel, Nolan Ryan,. William Shatner, Lyle Lovett, Kiefer Sutherland to name a few. Enlist one as an eloquent ambassador like the  tea party movement has just done  with  Jon Voight. In my humble opionion being on the defensive and playing the victim hasn’t worked yet for the livestock industry.
