If you are a horse lover who has  studied history to any length you know the price the equine species has paid for our freedom. I’m Susan Allen this is Open Range I’ll be back with a modern day war horse and a new movie directed by Steven Spielberg. Horses are still on active duty. Miggs was recently honored for his role in the failed New York Times Square bombing. One of the first responders to the burning car Miggs a 15 year old police horse remained calm amazingly especially in light of the smoke pouring from the vehicle surprising his rider as as most horses are frighten by the smell. His heroic actions allowed Officer Wayne Rhatigan to move people quickly from the area.Miggs received cupcakes, carrots and apples for this effort  but throughout history the majority of his fellow equines serving our country have received nothing but misery for their efforts.  Over a million horses were sent across the English Channel from England during WWI. Only  62,000 returned. Many were American mustangs and cow ponies. The majority of the US history, from the revolutionary war up into WWi was fought using "natural" horsepower. To honor their service Stephen Spielberg is directing a movie called “War Horse” based on the book of the same name by Michael Morpurgo and produced by the team that did Seabiscuit. It’s a WWI saga of a farm horse named Joey sold off to the British army and the the young boy who tries to reunite with his friend. The author of War Horse, says he was moved to write the book after studying the plight of horses in battle who were, after all, in his words “only doing our bidding” Sounds like a memorible movie and a tear jerker!
