Last American Cowboy
You know I’ve never been a “reality show buff” but after reading a beef industry blog and being pestered by my son, Tommy I tuned in last Monday to Animal Planet for an episode of Last American Cowboy, and.... I liked it. Welcome to Open Range I’m Susan Allen. My son’s been needling me to check out Animal Planets new program, Last American Cowboy, typically I’m on a horse most evenings but I made an effort to catch an episode and found it captivating. It’s artistically filmed midst breathtaking Montana scenery and the description reads, “the epic adventure follows three families of tenacious and headstrong cowboys through freak storms, deadly outbreaks of disease, hungry predators and forest fires.” One is a multi-generational ranch family committed to working only on horseback, the other, a modern rancher who uses a helicopter to manage his huge operation, the third a small nuclear family struggling to make ends meet. Comments on Beef Blogs we’re are all positive! One rancher liked the no “sugar coating”, citing how the show showed life and death and all the struggles they go through and wrote of being especially touched when the producers showed how upset ranchers get when they lose a calf. Another called the program a “great window into the lives of cattle producers” stating that people who merely punch a time card each week, have no idea how tough a life in production agriculture is.” I’m tuning in again, as I, too am captivated by those three families and their heart wrenching adventure to raise American Beef.
