Sages Saga

I looked at the papers and looked back at the horse, it couldn’t be the same animal the one the registration was typy and pretty, the horse before me had a big head, skinny neck and the sunken eye sockets of a much older animal. I’m Susan Allen on today’s Open Range, stay tuned for the saga of Sage. Sage is Open Range’s poster child for unwanted horses, a relative found her and gave her to my son to see if she could be rehabilitated, and  I admit I have my doubts. Veterinarians give scores of one to nine for equine body conditions. One  being emaciated, nine very fat. Sage is a  high two or three a dangerous place for a three year old and  like a malnourished child there’s no way to know  what developmental damage she’s  has incurred.  A picture of Sage (after three weeks on good hay ) is posted on my OpenRange page at aginfo.net. This week Sage starts on a new  Purina feed called Healthy Edge. Feeding correctly during this initial process is critical and has been easier thanks to Purina’s animal care specialists like Pat Herndon who are just an online click away. The  epidemic  of unwanted horses means there are thousands of “Sages”  so I thought it would  be interesting to track her recovery online and on air  over the next few months in order to help others who end up a neglected horse’s angel. So join me on the ultimate horse make over, follow Sages Sage  on aginfo.net at  Open Range were we will attempt to change a neglected filly into a "purpose driven"horse.
