A Remarkable Rancher
When you think you are too old to attempt a job or hobby, stop and remember these two words. Jane Haddock. That’s right this woman is an inspiration and an example for all when it comes to work ethic, dreams and aging well. Welcome to OpenRange I’ll be back with the story of one amazing ninety three year old rancher. While most folks over ninety that I know reside in assisted living or a care center not , Jane Haddock. Haddock raises cattle on her two hundred and twenty acre farm in JonesCountyGeorgia. Haddock attributes her passion for the cattle industry to a brief stint in the Red Cross right after college that served to make her really homesick and reconfirmed home would always be the ranch she was raised on. Starting on just eight acres and the original homestead because her father had lost most of the ranch in the great depression, Haddock bought her first cow in 1950. Sixty years latter she still lives in the same house she grew up in, she has never married and spends everyday, including weekends and holidays with her cattle. Now some might not think that’s healthy but it’s worked to keep Haddock fit and sassy. Until recently she was still loading her own calves and hauling them to the sale yard. Today Haddock admits to having a little help from friends. I’ll warn you if you arrive unannounced to her farm, chances are you’ll find the 93 year old up on a tractor moving hay, fixing fence or feeding her seventy five cows. Jane Haddock is inspiration for all of us that if you have passion , persistence and drive age doesn’t matter a lick.
