I am proud that the horse Industry has a reputation for being proactive when there’s an issue that needs solving.  I’m Susan Allen and I’ll be back to tell you about Operation Gelding when Open Range returns. I was pretty stunned to find out how much it was going to cost me to have a little stray dog I found neutered, no wonder there are so many homeless cats and dogs. The horse industry has been hit hard with the unwanted animal issue as well  but has taken action through the Unwanted Horse Coalition's,  Operation Gelding. As of November 17, more than one hundred and twenty stallions have been gelded in sixteen different states with twenty five more clinics scheduled before the end of the year. Operation Gelding is a win win in that veterinary students like those at Texas A& M work with seasoned professionals  to learn proper castration techniques. The Coalition provides funds and materials to help organizations that want to sponsor these clinics for  horse owners. Seed money from the American Association of Equine Practitioners and the Unwanted Horse Coalition got the program off the ground and donations keep it funded. Funds of $50 dollars per horse gelded   with $1000 maximum are awarded  to groups once a year.  If your’re interested in an hosting an Operation Gelding clinic in 2011 fill out the  online form as soon as possible. The Unwanted Horse Coalition has other ways riding groups and assocaitons can help horses in need  through a variety of activities and events I’ve posted a link to their site on this story at aginfo.net ecaslin@horsecouncil.com
