I’m Susan Allen. When Claire Danes accepted her Golden Globe this month for the made for TV movie called Temple Grandin,  she created  an even larger platform for the esteemed professor of animal science. Temple Grandin speaks out  when OpenRange returns. No doubt Temple Grandin is probably the most famous animal welfare advocate, especially in the agricultural field. She attributes her autism for her ability to inherently understand what goes on in an animal’s mind. Grandin is currently calling for more openness among farmers and ranchers and recently said  that “Agriculture has got to start doing a much better job of communicating with the public by citing the fact that most people don’t even know the difference between dairy and beef cattle. She’s on a mission to get farmers and ranchers to open up their operations.  In Grandin’s  perfect world there would be video cameras in both barns and feed lots so in her word “people can see how animals live and die”. Grandin’s credited for developing a comprehensive animal welfare audit for slaughterhouses now used throughout North America. Twenty years ago slaughterhouses were rift with equipment failure and unsupervised staff resulting in animals that weren’t killed humanely  with the stun gun now  thanks to Grandin’s efforts on going audits, regular maintenance and surveillance cameras revealed that not one American plant failed the stunner test last year.  Temple Grandin is again reminder of the impact just one person’s can have on the lives of humans and animals if they care to care.
