Using Program Bulls

Welcome to Open Range, I’m Susan Allen. Stay tuned because after the break I’ll check in with our field reporter, Greg Martin for the AgriBeef Minute.

I’m Greg Martin with the Open Range AgriBeef Minute. Adding Program Bulls to your herd can make a major impact on your operation. Double R Auctioneer and Vice President of the Northern Video Auction Joe Goggins explains what Program Bulls are.

GOGGINS: Bulls with program that will add some program to a set of calves that they sire would basically be coming from an outfit that performance tests these bulls, they ultrasound test and carcass test these bulls and come out of a cow herd that’s established and has been in production for many years.

He says, using this type of genetics can really improve herd dynamics and the overall value of your calf crop.

GOGGINS: There’s a real value to a rancher to use a set of bulls that they know has some history as far as consistency at the performance level, at the carcass level and that really adds value to some of these cattle.

Using high quality bulls will also increase the producers marketing opportunities by qualifying for branded beef programs. Bottom line, says Goggins, is what the consumer buys and puts on the plate.

GOGGINS: The end is always the consumer and if we’re going to stay in business we’ve got to sell the feeder an animal that’ll gain, that’ll perform at a real efficient level. At the end of the day we’re all selling to the consumer.

I’m Greg Martin and that’s today’s AgriBeef Minute.

Thanks Greg. Don’t forget Greg will be back each Wednesday with the AgriBeef Minute. AgriBeef, Maximizing the Power of Partnership.  I’m Susan Allen.
