The Power Of Facebook
On yesterdays segment I told you about a new Facebook movement called "Oprah Visit My Farm" that’s already had more than 800 members from nearly every state urging Oprah to visit their farms and ranches and see how American farmers treat their livestock with dignity, well I’ve got another Facebook phenomena, this one effecting the horse industry so stay tuned for Open Range, I’m Susan Allen reporting. I admit to being sporadic about my Facebook use but others are utilizing it’s power and reach with heart warming results. Due to the death of a friend, who was a thoroughbred breeder like herself Lynn Boggs was provided with a window of opportunity by the mans son to find homes for fifty –two horses within just one week after the owners death or the stable of thoroughbreds would be sent to auction, meaning most likely those horses would end up in Mexican rendering plant. So Boggs posted a plea for help on Facebook and her post spread in the matter of hours throughout the world resulting in more than four thousand phone calls as folks stepped up to take the horses from as far away as Germany. Within four days all 52 equines were placed. The outpouring stunned Boggs who purposely avoided using the word “slaughter” in her posting. But apparenlty others didn't when forwarding her message a reason Boggs believed her post touched a cord with so many. She still receives hundreds of calls each week and reminds callers that there are so many other horses to adopt. In Lynn Boggs words” There should not be a horse in the U.S. that would need to be rescued, die of starvation, or go to the killers if everyone just stepped up like they did for these horses”. Ah the power of Facebook, I’m Susan Allen
