The Demise Of Meat
Hi Susan Allen for Open Range. I pulled out some old class photos the other day, you know the ones where the kids are in three lines with the tall skinny guy always back, middle. Anyway I observed something interesting, not one of Mr. Baumans fifth graders in that 1966 class room were obese, knobby kneed yes and only Betty would have been considered a bit chubby yet I was raised on what today is known as “comfort food” , hamburgers, meatloaf , hotdogs, macaroni casseroles, potato salad and brownies. Yum! And unless you were Catholic you ate meat every day of the week. Stay tuned after the Break. So is Peta winning in it’s fight to rid meat from our diets ? They say yes. School districts and colleges now have meat less Mondays . The U.S. Department of Agriculture posted new guidelines that urge everyone to replace meat with fish yet despite all the bans and food police tactics kids just keep getting dangerously fatter. Yes there are more indoor diversion like video games then those days when kids played outside until dark but we also didn't have activist groups trying to frighten us about about our food choices. Peta was recently quoted in Wall Street Journal saying they have fielded 850,000 requests for vegetarian starter kits. Yes a lot of request but I wonder how many “converts” . Tomorrow, Ranchers go on the offensive... how about an MBA in beef-advocacy? Not kidding and remember to visit OpenRange on Facebook where I share more musings on cattle, horses, comfort food whatever! .
