Welcome to  Open Range, I’m Susan Allen  where’s the best place to live in the Northwest  if you’re a cowboy, Ellensburg, Pendleton, Redding, Caldwell, stay tuned I think you’ll  be surprised by the answer. So many places throughout the Northwest and Northern California are rich with ranching and rodeo traditions,  to step back in time just head to the Great Basin wheree Oregon, Idaho and Nevada converge. If you’re lucky enough to ride into a cow camp you’ll see the same gear that was used over a hundred years ago in the Old California/vaquero  ranching traditions. Of course there is Ellensburg and Pendleton both rich with rodeo history .  Yet the staff of American Cowboy Magazine took all of this into condsideration when deciding on the top twenty best places in the west to live if you’re  a cowboy and the editor Philip Armour said they picked places they heard have authentic flavor, a cowboy or ranching core and a small town feel. So with a drum roll making the  American Cowboy Magazine’s top twenty list of communities that  exemplify the best in the west is Kennewick Washington, part of the booming Tri-cities area that remained fairly  unscathed from the economic downturn experienced in other western towns. American Cowboy magazine highlighted the fact that Kennewick has a Cowboy Gathering and a Spring Barrel Tasting each April. I can’t imagine the cowboys I know prioritizing wine tasting but with the Trac facility, lots of cattle and great weather sports like Quarter horse racing, Team roping, barrels and gaming are thriving.
