February's Cattle on Feed Report

With an overview of last week's monthly USDA Cattle on Feed report, here is USDA Livestock Analyst Shayle Shagam

Shagam: "The number of cattle on feed on March first was just under 10.8 million head which was virtually unchanged from a year ago. During February producers placed just under 1.7 million head which was 1 percent a year earlier. And during February feedlots marketed just over 1.6 million head which was 4 percent above a year earlier."

In Idaho, the number of cattle on feed was 250,000 head, which remained the same as than the previous month and 4 percent higher than a year ago. An estimated 36,000 head were placed on feed which was 3 percent higher than the previous month and 5 percent lower than a year ago.

In Washington, the number of cattle on feed was at 185,000 head which the same as the previous month and 5 percent lower than a year ago. An estimated 34,000 head were placed on feed down 6 percent from the previous month, and 11 percent lower than a year ago.

In Colorado, the number of cattle on feed in feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or greater was estimated at 910,000 head. That was the 1 percent higher than the previous month's inventory, and 2 percent higher than a year ago. Placements were 180,000 head which unchanged from the previous month, and 6 percent higher as a year ago.
