How You Handle Your Cows

How You Handle Your Cows

In addition to considering your cows nutritional needs prior to breeding season — it is also important to consider how you handle your cows as well. Performix Nutrition Systems Animal Nutritional Consultant Dr. Boone Carter says there are more things to think of as well

Carter: "One of the critical things that people need to keep in mind is that animal handling is pretty critical for breeding performance. If your animals are handled and stressed in any way, then their performance is not going to be as good and they won't breed as well. So if you are doing an timed AI program or any program like that how you manage those cattle in the chutes — not using hot shots — handling cattle quietly makes a big difference in the reproductive outcome. That is one critical factor that we need to keep in mind. The other critical factor we need to keep in mind is that the reproductive function at breeding season is really a function of how the cattle were treated 60 days prior to that and that includes bulls as well."
