March's Cattle on Feed Report

March's feedlot placements were larger than anticipated. With an overview of last week's monthly USDA Cattle on Feed report, here is USDA Livestock Analyst Senicaa Herron

Herron: "The number of cattle on feed at 1,000 plus capacity of feedlots on April first was 10.9 million head, just slightly larger than a year ago. The number of animals placed during the month of March was 2.1 million head, approximately 11 percent above than a year ago. And also for the month of March, that is the highest number of animals placed on record since the series began in 1996. The number of animals marketed during the month of March was 1.9 million head."

In Idaho, the number of cattle on feed was 255,000 head, which was 2 percent higher than the previous month and 6 percent higher than a year ago. An estimated 41,000 head were placed on feed which was 14 percent higher than the previous month and 11 percent higher than a year ago.

In Washington, the number of cattle on feed was at 195,000 head which was 5 percent higher than the previous month and the same as a year ago. An estimated 42,000 head were placed on feed up 24 percent from the previous month, and 11 percent higher than a year ago.

In Colorado, the number of cattle on feed in feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or greater was estimated at 930,000 head. That was the 2 percent higher than the previous month's inventory, and 3 percent higher than a year ago. Placements were 195,000 head which was 8 percent higher than the previous month, and 18 percent higher as a year ago.
