The negotiations can now begin in 90 days, as outlined by law after a notification letter is sent to Congress. U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer shares

Lighthizer: "Today President Trump is fulfilling one of his key promises to the American people to renegotiate NAFTA. To get a better deal for American workers, farmers and ranchers, and businesses. Lighthizer says the USTR office will begin working on negotiation intentions immediately.

Lighthizer: "USTR will now intensify the consultations with Congress. Next week USTR will publish in the Federal Register a notice requesting public input on the direction, focus and content on the NAFTA negotiations. As required under the Trade Promotion Authority, the USTR will publish objectives of the negotiations at least 30 days before the formal negotiations begin. Following the TPA timeline, the United State swill be able to pursue full negotiations with Canada and Mexico as soon as August 16th."

Lighthizer says he spoke with his counterparts in Mexico and Canada, adding all three nations will benefit from the renegotiation.
