With your Land and Livestock Report, I'm Susan Allen. Since we just bought a Wagu bull I was especially interested in hearing about the Snake River Farms Waygu program from Director of Procurement and Producers Relations Annie Inks. She told me that their production program is unique in that they have a closed system ad they are involved in every aspect from providing the genetics to the processing plant.

Inks: "We raise Wagyu bulls at our Washington ranch and those bulls feed into our bull battery program. We then lease out those bulls to ranchers all over the Western States and then we contract to buy all of their calves back so all of their F1 half-wagyu calves are feeding back into our feeding program. Those animals are fed for approximately 500 days and then that product is processed and that is our Snake River Wagyu Beef program that is exported all over the world and is primarily a food service product."

Inks continues with some of the perimeters of the program.

Inks: "We prefer to breed with Black Angus cows or heifers so that is the requirement there and we do like to work with ranchers that have at least 150 or so female. We would like to get at least a truckload of calves from each ranch."

She said a selling point of using Wagyu bulls is that they tend to throw lighter calves so they work really good on first calf heifers.
