As livestock continue to graze those late fall and early winter pastures, it’s important to make sure their nutritional requirements are being met. And is the case with most things, a one-size fits all nutritional program isn’t always the best for the animal or your bottom line.

Boone Carter is a nutrition and production consultant for PerforMix Nutrition Systems in Blackfoot, Idaho.

“One of the key things that we do that makes us different from just going to the store and buying a generic mineral supplement is we try to test the feeds that ranchers have available” said Carter. “Whether it’s pasture or hay samples and then based on the feed resources you have and already own we can taylor a supplement program to balance those cows nutritional needs based on what you have. It takes the guess work out of your nutritional program. It also ends up being less expensive because you not only get better production because you have the right things but also because you don’t have to pay for things you don’t need.”
