Mark Werner, owner of BCguideoutfitters up in British Columbia, tells me there are between 10,000 and 15,000 wolves in British Columbia. That is compared with 1/10 as many down here in the Northwest and he says there overpopulations are created by man. “Because of oil and gas, logging, roads, access into the Alpine, we have had an artificial explosion of wolves. It hasn’t been controlled. Man caused this and now we have to bring it back to balance because in some cases we have wildlife populations that are so low because of the wolves, if we don’t do something we are going to see some jurisdictions of caribou that are about to be extinct in B.C. The government as liberalized the hunting laws, that’s why we are able to do what we do. The government is actually doing a professional call, it's the right thing to do and we are going to bring the wolf population back into balance. There is a rancher down here named Bill Davis who contends that many wolves are not actually killed by biting attacks but just literally run to death by exhaustion from wolves. He is absolutely right. That part is hard to substantiate. We had an excellent Cattleman’s Association and they have teamed up with conservation officers, Fish and Wildlife, the B.C. Trappers Association, the Guides Association and some of the resident hunter groups have banded together to address this situation.
