Ag Week

Ag Week

This is national agriculture week and those of us living in the Northwest are invited to say thanks to those who produce food and fiber for a living as part of the celebration.

The annual observation gives Oregon Department of Agriculture Director Alexis Taylor an opportunity to provide daily themes and messages throughout the special week: “National Ag Week to me is really about connecting people who don’t think about where their food comes from every single day and taking a week to talk about who are our farmers and ranchers and what are they doing, not just to feed us and feed our families, but also provide real economic drivers in a lot of our communities across the state.”

With National Agriculture Week running from a Monday through a Sunday, Taylor has identified seven themes– one for each day. Her first message directed to Oregonians is about how they can say thank you:

“You really can thank a farmer, I think, with your pocketbook. I think that’s a great way– buy local foods, whether that’s through your community farmers’ market, looking for the Oregon seal on our fruits and vegetables at the grocery store, but also any farmers or ranchers you know, just say thank you.”

Other daily themes center on how food and agriculture bring everyone together, the importance of agriculture to our economy and environment, who are today’s farmers, a special message to farmers themselves, and how to celebrate agriculture all year long.
