Friendly Trade

Since we've done a dozen stories about how Pres. Trump feels about trading with foreign countries, as in the NAFTA agreement which he calls an absolute disaster throughout his campaign, and we have gotten a peek at his negotiation style which seems pretty much cut and dried, my way or the highway, there are some in agriculture who believe that actual human relationships, meaning sitting down at a table in a civil manner and talking, can, no pun intended here, trump strict interpretations of rules and regulations. One such person is National Pork Board President Jan Archer. During a recent trip to Mexico City She tried to reinforce the strong friendship and trade relations with Mexico. “We want keep them as a partner, we want to keep them as a market so maintaining those relationships and keeping those relationships, whether you're selling a car or selling a commodity, knowing someone, having the opportunity to talk to them and shake their hand is really helpful in establishing good trade relationships, so that's one of the things that we wanted to do as a board.”

Mexico utilizes pork cuts that are not typically served in the United States. Archer says incomes are improving in Mexico and as that continues, consumers will demand more protein. That is seen as positive news for U.S. pork.
