The effects of bovine respiratory disease can be tremendous. In fact, BRD is the top health and economic issue facing the beef industry today but early vaccines can also reduce stress and enhance bovine respiratory disease protection.  To keep calves healthy, Dr. Stephen Foulke, professional services veterinarian at Boehringer Ingelheim says you have to have a plan. "Keep it simple, go back to basics. Make sure we have our plan and our protocol set down. Make sure we have our nutrition down. Make sure the basics are there. Let's make sure they can respond to the vaccine properly. Are they being handled properly? Are they low stress? Do they have their minerals? Do they have access to water and good quality feed? Have we reduced other stressors on them? Do we have them in a nice, dry, healthy environment? Have we reduced all of these things that fight against them? This is what we really need to focus on because once we have these basics down, now we know that they will respond even better to our vaccination protocols and if we do need to treat them, they will respond better to our treatment protocol."
