Chad Schofield, the founder of BioGen ag systems told us about a system he has designed to grow fodder such as barley for livestock which is cheaper, more nutritional and faster than anything conventional farming methods produce. It's basically a greenhouse in a standard ISO shipping container filled with trays where you plant the seeds you wish to grow.

“Add solar and wind generation to it so that it can operate off grid that way a farmer can place it in a situation where he may not necessarily have electricity. He has you know a couple of thousand acres of pasture but some of its way out there. Well you can actually have this day put down. Way back there and it will operate so that we have the growth units tied. The farmer will go in and he'll plant a tray of seeds he'll consume about 25 pounds of seed a day per shell of whatever he's planting and he will harvest close to 300 pounds a day per shelf from those ISO containers. It's just a matter of how many shelves you plan on consuming to increase your volume.”
