03/29/06 Tulip Festival

The Tulips are blooming. I'm Greg Martin with today's Line on Agriculture. Every year fields in northwest Washington State's Skagit Valley burst forth with beautiful colors and people from all over the world make the trek to view the spectacle. This years 23rd Annual Tulip Festival begins this weekend and runs through the end of April. Cindy Verge is the Executive Director of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. She gives a little history behind the festival. VERGE: It started 23 years ago when we noticed that people were coming up to enjoy the beautiful tulip blossoms. We started with 5 different events and activities now we have over 40 events and activities and we've grown from one weekend to an entire month. Activities begin this weekend but it may be a bit early for a lot of the tulips. VERGE: The thing that I always like to make sure people realize is our festival lasts 30 days but the tulips will bloom according to Mother Nature. If you are planning a trip to Skagit County you'll want to check the events itinerary. VERGE: We have events and activities in Mount Vernon, Laconner, Burlington, Sedro Wooly, Anacortes and points in between. And that way our whole county can participate and that's why we call it the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. If you'd like more information regarding the Tulip Festival, you can visit their website at www.tulipfestival.org or by calling 360-428-5959.
