Markets were closed Thursday and Friday which gives us a chance to look back and reflect on where prices were over the last couple of years December corn ended Wednesday unchanged, at 364 1/2. December Corn a year ago was in the 3-80 range. 4% off Wheat is where we have really seen the swing around a 30% drop in prices Chicago December Wheat ended Wednesday at 4-80. A year ago prices were .82 cents higher at 5-62. On November 27th Portland prices for soft white wheat of ordinary protein for Jan, were steady, ranging from 4-88 ¾ to 5-38. And when you compare that to a year ago at 7-17 and ¾. Hard Red Winter wheat with 11 ½ % protein, prices for Nov. were slightly up, ranging from 5-52 to 5-67. Compared to Nov 27 2013 Hard Red Winter Wheat prices at around 7-50 Wednesday's DNS wheat with 14 % protein, prices for Nov. were steady, ranging from 6-22 3/4 to 6-57 3/4. And a year ago DNS wheat was around the 9-60 a three dollar swing to the negative. Cattle prices are down a fair amount compared to last year however if you compare prices to 2013 there is a lot of similarity in both the Live Cattle futures and feeder cattle futures. Dec. live cattle closed last Wednesday up 35 cents, at 130.60. Jan. Year ago live cattle were at 169 and had us cattle producers wearing a smile as big as the brim on our hats.
