Spring Turkey season is upon us, so I thought it would be wise to reach out to Al Strup as we prepare our hunting gear for the season. Al what type of call do you use the most when turkey hunting? Al Strup. "I've had a lot of turkey in the past. Tell me what would your preference be in terms of calling them. I have used a multitude of mouth calls and slates and box calls. I have used everything. Any more luck with one than the other? I prefer mouth calls. Here's a many stories about turkeys being difficult to get because of their keen senses, hearing, vision. Advice? You have to have great camouflage. If they see movement, they’re gone. It's that simple. You gotta be a great caller and as close to invisible as you can be. You also want to have good decoys on the ground. They need to be as a real looking as you can possibly get. They are a lot better than they were back in my day. Do you sell them at sportsman’s warehouse? I have three or four different kinds… Hens, Jakes, full-size male gobblers. Different manufacturers. Some are more realistic than others. We have foam, collapsible, some you fill with air. I also have calls. I have the whole 9 yards.

Thanks all for your input. Some important tips for spring turkey hunting are:

Do your Pre-Season Scouting, learn their pattern

Figure out where the likable Roosts are.

Invest in a nice decoy or two

Know your shot gun pattern. Some guns pattern different with differ brands or shot size.

Also know your effective range.
