01/13/05 Challenge settlement; Zoellick out?

There is some apparent opposition to the proposed settlement over water rights along the Snake River of Idaho. And that opposition is coming not from the Nez Perce tribe or environmentalists, but the Idaho County Property Owners Association. They say the recent settlement will harm private property rights in two ways & reducing property tax incomes for some rural counties which in turn could foster legal action, and limiting the number of trees that private land owners can harvest near fish bearing streams. The second concern is that if property owners along the Salmon and Clearwater Rivers don't go along with a voluntary agreement to limit harvest in exchange for protections from some Endangered Species Act based lawsuits, then landowners would be targeted for legal action. The Association expressed their concerns in written form to federal and state lawmakers. One of the U.S.'s top international ag trade negotiators appears ready to take on a new job. There is word that U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick will move on from that position. However, according to published reports, Zoellick will remain in the Bush Administration as Deputy Secretary of State under Condalizza Rice. Reports also state possible successors to Zoellick if he steps down as U.S. Trade Rep include Deputy Trade Rep Josette Shiner, former Deputy National Security Adviser Gary Edson, Arizona Representative Jim Kolbe, and Commerce Undersecretary for Trade Grant Aldonas. Now with today's Food Forethought, here's Susan Allen. ALLEN: A new year always brings with it new marketing buzz words sure to be on the tip of trend watchers tongues. So in 2005 expect to hear more about "buy-cotting". Buy-cotting is the condition that occurs when consumers use their purchasing power to make political statements. Researchers have found that generation Y, those born in the late 1970's through the early -90's are the most socially conscience consumers and the first to embrace buy-cotting . Wait just a minute. I contest that we aging baby boomers initiated the buy-cotters bandwagon, our generation changed French Fries to Freedom Fries and patted ourselves on the back when we petered out the sale of anything French. While buy-cotting appears opposite of boycotting, in reality our purchases caused the American and Australian wine industries to boom while French wine sales plummeted. Give credit where credit is due. In 2005 we can expect to see more marketing focused on the advocacy consumerism movement especially the food industry. I'm Susan Allen and this is Food Forethought.
