Pushing Cuba & Pesticide Stewardship

Pushing Cuba & Pesticide Stewardship

Pushing Cuba & Pesticide Stewardship. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.

The opening of permanent relations with Cuba is a top priority for the Obama Administration. Both President Obama and Raul Castro have agreed to "work on the agenda that both countries will be discussing in the next few months towards the normalization of relations." Agriculture would be one of the big winners to an open market with Cuba. During his United Nations address, the President stressed again the importance of lifting the embargo.

OBAMA: For 50 years, the United States pursued a Cuba policy that failed to improve the lives of the Cuban people.  We changed that.  We continue to have differences with the Cuban government. We will continue to stand up for human rights.  But we address these issues through diplomatic relations, and increased commerce, and people-to-people ties.  As these contacts yield progress, I'm confident that our Congress will inevitably lift an embargo that should not be in place anymore.  (Applause.)

As part of Oregon's Pesticide Stewardship Partnership Program, the Oregon Department of Agriculture is issuing a request for innovative project proposals to those interested in submitting collaborative proposals focused on preventing or reducing pesticides from entering waters of the state. Proposed projects must focus on preventing and/or reducing the risk posed by pesticides entering water systems in agricultural, urban/rural residential, or forestry environments. Written proposals must be received by Friday, November 20, 2015,  12:00 PM Pacific Standard Time.

That's today's Northwest Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network of the West.
