This is your Northwest report for Wednesday,, February 22, I'm David Sparks and remember this? "The Idaho State Department of Agriculture has a cull onion rule. the rule states that cull onions or unused onions will be plowed under by 15 March. That is to prevent the introduction or the spread of the onion maggot. I do think under the circumstances there may be possible exceptions or exemptions allowed." That was Dr. Bill Barton with Idaho Department of Agriculture referring to all of the damaged onions due to snow load related onion storage cave-ins. I know there was a lot of damage in Oregon as well. However, Idaho officials have extended the deadline for farmers to dispose of spoiled or damaged onions following the collapse of many onion storage facilities in southwestern Idaho due to heavy snow.

The Idaho State Department of Agriculture has announced that the March 15 deadline has been extended to April 15 in an attempt to give onion farmers some flexibility in dealing with the massive disposal effort. ISDA says many facilities are reporting total losses.

Elsewhere, as most rural kids throughout the Northwest know, this is national FFA week and Idaho has received a visit from a very high profile FFA member... Victoria Harris who is the National FFA Secretary. She says she is here to celebrate all that FFA has done.
