Not All Pathogens Are Alike, Why Should Vaccines Be?

This is the time of year that ranchers are having to watch closely for pinkeye in their herd. Similar to many diseases, there are different strains of pinkeye pathogens. How do you select the right solution for the strain that is infecting your cattle?
Newport Laboratories is the nation’s largest manufacturer of autogenous biologics for cattle. What that means is that following a diagnostic of infected animals, they provide a custom made vaccine specific to the individual animal and the particular strains that are infecting that animal.
Newport Laboratories Ruminant Business Unit Director Randy Shirbroun shares more details about the solution based vaccine his company provides through veterinarian to livestock clients.
Shirbroun: “What Newport Labs does is we work with veterinarians to provide diagnostic support to what they are doing in their practice. We have a diagnostic laboratory and we work up cases to identify what organisms or pathogens that may be causing disease in their cattle - for their clients. And then we can take the next step — if deemed appropriate by the attending veterinarian —- we can make a custom-made vaccine to help that veterinarian’s clients address those diseases in a preventative manner. It is a real solution-based problem solving approach to cattle diseases.”
