Vilsack's Solution for Beef Checkoff's Disagreements

Perhaps you’ve heard that USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack’s is proposing to create a second Beef Check Off using the 1996 Commodity Promotion Research and Information Act. This act is a very different Act than the current Beef Checkoff was created in 1985 — specifically for the beef industry.
Washington Cattlemen’s Association’s Executive Vice President Jack Field encourages all ranchers to be paying attention to this issue.
Field: “At the moment, is number one to be aware of what is happening that there is a possibility of change. And number two is to be ready when the opportunity comes up to engage. This isn’t something that you can expect your neighbor can go take care of it for you. We’re going to need everybody — all hands on deck — to be supportive, to be engaged, and to discuss this with their friends and neighbors. Make sure that folks understand what this is and why the Beef Checkoff is important and why it has succeed. And why we want to see it stay under the current frame work of where it’s producer led and producer driven.”
Field says currently there are a lot more questions about what might be proposed by Vilsack than answers but Field offers.
Field: “All we have to do is take a look — has there been anything from this current administration where carte blanche the federal government oversight has been good. We’ve already been fighting it tooth and nail with Waters of the U.S. We’ve already battle a couple years ago on Child Labor where we couldn’t let a kid drive a tractor. The list goes on and on and on.”
