Dietary Guideline Recommendations Conflicting

The 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s report was released last week and unfortunately the report is inconsistent and if adopted as the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans will lead to conflicting dietary advice. National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Registered Dietitian and Nutrition Scientist Dr. Shalene McNeill says
McNeill: “I think the headline from this report is that it is very inconsistent and there is a lot of conflicting information in this report. When it comes to meat, for example, on the one hand the Advisory Committee is recommending that healthy diets need to be lower in red meat but then the same report says that lean meats are part of a healthy dietary pattern. So the bottom line seems to be lost here is that today’s beef is lean meat — in fact there are more than 30 cuts of beef that meet the government’s guidelines for lean meat. So there is no basis for recommending that Americans need to eat less lean meat for their health.”
She shares what cattle producers can do
McNeill: “Producers need to get involved. The best way — the most impactful way — that they can be involved right now is to weigh in on the public comment process. There will be at least a 45 day public comment process. You can get information on beefusa.org. Not just producers — producers need to work with their health professionals — their dietitians and doctors that they know and get them involved too. Because we need more input from health professionals to understand and explain how important lean meat is in a healthy diet.”
