U.S. Beef Marketing Advantage

U.S. beef exports comprise about $7 billion dollars in value for the beef industry, so ongoing events in other parts of the world have real-time consequences to beef producer profitability. Travis Arp, manager of technical services with the U.S. Meat Export Federation, explains
Arp: “We see a general increase in the appetite for beef globally over the last five or six years, the total value of world beef exports is essentially doubled. I think in our more developed markets is where we are going to see a sustained growth for high quality U.S. beef. We are certainly starting to see an infiltration of U.S. beef into our other markets of SE Asia, South America, the Middle East. They are starting to have a growing test for high quality U.S. beef products.”
Arp also says the state of decreased global beef supplies is going to play a main factor in U.S ability to compete. Our largest competitor Australia is also experiencing low cow herd numbers. Arp says some competitors have a large upside potential.
Arp: “We are keeping a close eye on our competition — specifically countries like India — which has huge amounts of supplies of beef and is actively going around the world and negotiating agreements with China, Southeast Asian countries. They are seeing huge spikes in their export volume to those countries.”
