Chipolte Blames Australian Beef For its Food Borne Illness Woes

Chipolte Restaurant has been plagued with outbreaks of foodborne illness in its stores across the country for the past several months. I spoke with agvocate and I Am Agriculture Proud Blogger Ryan Goodman about what has been happening as of late with the restaurant chain
Goodman: “Here in the last few months and much of 2015, Chipolte has been dealing with food borne illness outbreak all across the country from a number of different unknown sources. The CDC finally came out and said that they couldn’t identify conclusive source for the contamination. Then Chipolte came out and identified Australian beef as being the culprit of much of the food borne illness outbreak. Which concerning, because it wasn’t that long ago that they were praising sourcing their beef from Australia. Also at that time it raised concerns and questions among U.S. beef producers, as Chipolte said they couldn’t find enough U.S. beef raised with integrity to their standards. So it is interesting and concerning to watch the restaurant chain flip flop back and forth on those messages about their protein source.”
According to several articles I read, the Australia Department of Ag has stated that there is no evidence linking Australian beef exports with the Chipolte food illness outbreaks.
Earlier this week, the restaurant chain closed all of their 2,000 locations for four hours to discuss with employees the recently implemented food safety measures.
