Cattle on Feed Report

Cattle on Feed Report

Last week USDA released its monthly Cattle on Feed Report and had less placements in March into feedlots than the pundits expected. USDA livestock analyst Shayle Shagam gives an overview of the national numbers.

Shagam: "The number of cattle on feed in feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or greater on April 1st was just under 10.9 million head which was about a percent above a year ago. During March producers placed about 1.9 million head which was about 5 percent above a year earlier. During March feedlots marketed about 1.7 million head which was about 7 percent above a year ago."

In Idaho the number of cattle placed into feedlots of 1,000 head or larger was 37,000 head, which is 23 percent increase from a year ago and 3 percent lower than the previous month.

In Colorado the number of cattle on feed in feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or later was estimated at 900,000 head on April first — that number is one percent above a year ago as well as being 1 percent above the previous month's inventory. The number of head placed into feedlots of a 1,000 head or more capacity was 165,000 which while 3 percent below the previous month was up 10 percent from a year ago.

In Washington the number of cattle that were placed into feedlots of a 1,000 or more head capacity were 38,000 head and that was a 3 percent decrease over last year, and the same as the previous month.
