3-8 SS Dog Gash 1

A recent hunting trip turned tragic for Josh Mills and a buddy. I’m David Sparks this is Sportsman Spotlight and I’ll return in a minute.  Josh Mills recently went hunting for quail with a good buddy of his and his hunting dog.  A terrible thing happened when they were out in the field and I’ll let Josh take over: “Recently I was taught a very good lesson in preparedness while I was out in the field chasing birds.  A good friend of mine got together to do a quick quail hunt near Spokane just to hunt for a few hours because with the baby coming I can’t get way too often. What happened is is that my buddy Marcus’s dog goes into the cover, it’s a German short haired pointer, and after the birds flushed and we downed a couple of quail, I knew something was wrong with Marcus’s dog. I got down to it and what I found was possibly the most graphic wound I’ve ever seen on an animal from the breast plate to where the stomach cavity comes in.  After 2 ½ hours of surgery for the dog the vet thought that the dogs hit a farm implement or fence or something and basically impaled itself on something in this little gully that we were hunting in. The cut was 4 inches long by 12 inches wide and about an eighth of an inch from going through the breastplate. After he got off whatever impaled him he ripped his skin completely open.”  What in the world do you do in a circumstance like that.  Follow the Boy Scout  motto… be prepared.
