4-15 SS Griz Recovery

Grizzly bear recovery in the contiguous United States and adjacent Canadian Provinces is overseen by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC).  Recovery efforts are broken down by the five ecosystems that have been identified as once having held the great bear and still retain the habitat required for grizzly recovery.   The Yellowstone Ecosystem has always maintained a population of grizzly bears. Recovery efforts started in 1975 and eventually resulted in the bears being delisted in 2007.  Subsequent legal challenges in 2009 resulted in the bears being placed back on the Endangered Species list as a threatened species.  Currently, a joint appeal filed by the United States Fish & Wildlife Service and the Department of Justice is being considered by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

With all of the arguing going on in courtrooms, I thought I would go to someone that would know and that would be Greg Losinsky  from Fish and Game. He’s out in the field and ought to have lots of information. Here he is with comments about whether or not the grizzly population is healthy: “ as far as the Yellowstone ecosystem is concerned, we believe that the bear population has recovered and is continuing to grow and is expanding to areas where bears once were and now we need to manage those populations.
