5-17 SS Ed Retires

A lot of important events as it relates to wolf hunting have occurred in the last week or two. Idaho has announced that a wolf hunt will occur this coming fall, that’s huge. And the leader of states managing their own wolf populations, a fish and game official out of Montana known as Ed  “the Wolfman” Bangs announced his retirement. I have known and worked with for years and caught up with him on the phone. Here he is: “I can tell you that our  governor is adamant about states controlling their own wolf population.  It is awfully difficult to argue with him. I don’t disagree with that. The job of the Endangered Species Act was to get wolves recovered, we did that, and we have been trying to transition them into a better management model through state management for years. I have no doubt at all that wolves will do fine and that the states will do a fine job. There certainly will be some bumps in the road along the way and some anxiety and that kind of stuff, but in the long run if you look at the success of mountain lions, black bears and deer and elk, the states will do a good job with wolf management and will reduce some of the damage we have seen lately so I  think it’s good news.
