5-23 SS Bear Danger

Bear hunters beware. There are actually instances where you hunters could actually become the hunted. That is not a pretty thought but it is entirely within the realm of possibility. This is sportsman’s spotlight, I am David Sparks, and we will talk about that subject with a fish and game official when we return.

Lately I have been talking to bear hunters. In fact, the other day, I did a story on a classic bow hunter named Ted Fry who  guides bear hunts  as part of his way to make a living. A federal judge even awarded a family who lost a child $1.95 million, saying the federal Forest Service should have warned them about a dangerous bear. Greg Losinski knows all about bears and I asked him if they ever thought of humans as a food source.  Greg had recently attended a seminar presented by Dr. Stephen Herrero, an international expert on bear attacks.  “Occasionally it does happen, just like there are people who do things for no reason, bears can as well, both black bears and grizzly bears although the chance of running into a black bear that will come after you will be far less than a grizzly and most problems with bears are a result of what humans have done. Occasionally there will be a cranky bear, an irate bear, or just a bear with issues that will go after people no matter what you have done. That’s the time you need to be thinking okay is this a black or a grizzly bear because generally black bears do not know they are powerful and you can intimidate them. Grizzly bears know they are powerful and you dare not intimidate them. Never try to run away from one, they can easily outrun you even downhill

Hunters, Greg says that if you are confronted pepper spray sometimes has more stopping power than a weapon.
