9-21 SS Flyfishing Bass

9-21 SS Flyfishing Bass

Today I am delighted to be with expert fly fisherman and all-around outdoorsman Mr. Josh Mills. Today’s topic with Josh is Bass fishing. I’ve done a fair amount of bass fishing but it has always been done in a boat with traditional casting reels, rods and baits.  Now obviously, having listened to our reports over the years you know that Josh is a flyfishing fanatic… Whoops make that expert. So there will be no surprise when you listen to Josh answer this question: can you fly fish for bass? Yes. Most definitely. Bass fishing on a fly rod can be just as productive as if you have a $35,000 Ranger boat with a 115 hp Mercury on the back. I actually know guys who exclusively fish bass tournaments with fly rods. But you kind of glad in a little different manner. You have a stout fly rod somewhere in the 5 to 7 weight range depending how big the fish are and you know it is really fun is going after them with mouse patterns. Every year I like to fish some of the tributaries that come off of the Snake and the Columbia rivers and those are full of smallmouth. Things like woolly buggers and mouse patterns can be deadly effective for those finish because they are very aggressive. They charge and hit anything they can especially during the time they are coming off spawn or going on spawn. Even things like farm ponds, or small lakes can really be productive with a guy and a fly rod and you can finish with buzz bombs if you want.” Okay Josh thank you very much and we look forward to the next time we encounter you on a lake, pond, river or stream. If there is a body of water, Josh will be there.
