Bear attack. It's a story old as time. People in the deep woods and they run into a sow with cubs. In this case, two hunters on an island in Alaska had harvested a deer and they were dragging it out of the woods. They decided to rest and eat lunch at which point a sow grizzly with two older cubs burst into the open and attacked one of the hunters. I called Greg Losinski of Fish and Game happens to be an expert on bears and bear safety. "The best way to be safe is to make a lot of noise to let the bears know that you are there and then if you are going to be doing anything like processing your game or stopping to take a break, do it in a place where you have lots of visibility so you are not accidentally to close to an animal like a sow grizzly with her cubs. If a problem does occur be sure to have bear spray available because while gunfire can work, there have been numerous cases in which partners of actually shot and killed the person was being attacked by the bear. Is bear spray as effective as a gun? Research shows that bear spray is twice as effective as a gun.
