Sportsman's Warehouse Sales Associate Keith McDowell talks about fishing for bass that are on their beds. "What works best get them to attack? if they are on the beds, just dragging any sort of soft plastic across the bed or a suspending crank bait. You don't want a floating one, you want to get it hovering right over their bed and they will hit it out of aggravation. They want it moved. They don't want it on their bed so pulling spinner baits or ripping a crank bait across the nest tolerably isn't going to trigger them to chase it down but if you get a suspending crank bait or I have found lizards, plastics, drag that across the bed, they don't want those things hanging out on their bed and messing with their babies. So they have a very strong instinct to protect. Oh yes. They don't want stuff around their bed. Sometimes they'll sit there and watch it and look at it, it may take a couple of casts but eventually she will get mad and she will move it away from the bed. I have had them when they are just gently picking up and they don't take the hook and they will grab that plastic can take it or 5 feet and just drop it down. But a lot of times they will pick it up and you will be able to slam them home, crank them in and then drop them back in the water.
