Spring Bear Set Up

The other day I got a hold of an old friend Justin Gibbons, owner of Outdoor Limitless. To explain his tactics on spring bear hunting.

Gibbons “Our bear season starts on April 15th, up here in Idaho and runs through June 15th. The bears usually get pretty good from mid-May on, they usually start rolling out of hibernation then. I like to shoot a 300 Ultra, I shoot 180 grain (AccuBond) and I do reload all my own bullets. I shoot for about 91 ½ grains of powder. I think the gun’s good all around, I like it, I’ve hunted in Alaska a lot, around the northwest. It’s a good elk rifle, you can never have too much power even for deer. It takes your bad shots and makes them deadly shots. It’s nice to shoot the heavy hitting gun, its flat shooting. I do a lot of long range shooting as well, and I’m pretty proficient out to about 800 yards.”

Tom “Justin, you make some pretty good points there. I myself shoot a 338 Win Mag, pushing 225 grains. He’s right, when animals are out there a little ways it’s nice to have a bigger grain to knock them down better, but they are good guns.”

Matt “Justin and Tom thanks for sharing some your hunting tactics out here in the northwest. I know as a hunter myself, these conversations these kind of conversations about rifle calibers and ammunition can almost seem like a science to outsiders. But the main thing to keep in mind when hunting, is shot placement and being comfortable with your setup.”
