Good friend Scotty Cyr was bow hunting in the Idaho wilderness for elk when he saw a black speck at the top of a mountain which turned out to be a bear headed toward him. “It was fairly open, there were openings and timber and I kept seeing the bear creeping closer and closer down to the bottom and I'm like, you know, I bet he's coming down for water because it was a fairly hot day. He got to about 300 yards away and I said yes, this is really going to happen, he's coming down to get water. He was up the canyon about a half-mile from me. I would watch him and as soon as he went into cover I would run down the side of the hill towards him, wait, pick him out again and run again and so forth. Finally I got to the point where I figured I was 100 yards from him and down on the bottom it was all grown willows which are probably 5 feet high and I’m not much taller, if at all, so I was standing there and all of a sudden, there is the bear. I put the range finder on him, he is 32 yards, I'm like, oh sweet. I put the rangefinder down, knock an arrow, he steps often drops down into the willows and I'm like, this is great, I can’t see anything now. He's in the willows, I'm in the willows and all of a sudden he steps 26 yards from me. I range find 26 yards when he turns and goes back into the willows. There's a little bush, I say okay that's 18 yards, I say if it comes out in there I know the range. I'm standing on a tree, 18 yards, he steps right out, turns and starts walking right at me.”
