Grouse Plan Review Must Emphasize Multi-Use and States

In early June U.S Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke signed Secretarial Order 3353 to improve sage-grouse conservation and strengthen communication and collaboration between state and federal governments. Colorado Cattlemen's Association Executive Vice President Terry Fankhauser says this constructive review is important as changes are needed.

Fankhauser: "There were some clear overreaches from the last administration related to how planning should happen for multi-use. This administration is attempting to reset that and restructure that in a fashion that we not only consider multi-use but we consider effective localized engagement, planning and execution because hopefully they are going to de-centralize some of this work out of D.C. and into the West where the grouse are, where the oil and gas and the ranching is — makes sense."

The CCA strongly supports the engagement of stakeholders, states and local government in the Department of the Interior's review. It is CCA's desire to see this approach enhance collaboration, and ultimately, partnerships that will benefit not only the Greater Sage Grouse, but Colorado's economy and public-private partnerships.
